Cape Fear Skyway
Project # U-4738
Type: New Toll Freeway
Affected Counties: Brunswick, New Hanover
Estimated Cost: $1,021,000,000
The Cape Fear Skyway is a proposed new toll road that spans 9.5 miles from the U.S. 17 bypass in Brunswick County to U.S. 421 near Wilmington. The road will include a new high-rise bridge over the Cape Fear River.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposed the new roadway as a way to increase traffic flow and freight movements by connecting major routes in Brunswick and New Hanover County, and allowing easier access to the port. The project will also decrease hurricane evacuation times and help with emergency evacuation from Progress Energy's Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport.
