As part of the I-85 widening project, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will replace the two bridges (No. 21 and 34) over the Norfolk Southern Railroad and U.S. 29/N.C. 152 in China Grove.
According to NCDOT Bridge Information, Bridge No. 21 over the Norfolk Southern Railway was built in 1936, carries a safety rating of 11 out of 99, and is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Bridge No. 34 over U.S. 29/N.C. 12 was built in 1956, carries a safety rating of 18 out of 99, and is also considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.
These two bridge replacements are part of the overall 13-mile I-85 widening from Concord to China Grove in Rowan and Cabarrus Counties.
