Description

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes improvements to the I-95 interchange at US 701 and NC 96 (Exit 90) in Four Oaks under Project #I-5974. The proposed improvements are intended to accommodate projected future traffic volumes along the I-95 corridor by enhancing mobility and traffic flow at the interchange and by improving the bridge’s vertical and horizontal clearances to support the future widening of I-95.

The primary upgrades being proposed include:

Bridge Replacements: Demolishing and replacing the aging overpass structures to accommodate modern traffic loads and height clearances.
Roundabout Installations: Constructing new roundabouts at the intersection of the I-95 ramp terminals and Devil’s Racetrack Road to eliminate severe conflict points and streamline traffic.
Ramp Realignment: Reconfiguring the existing on and off-ramps to improve merging distance and safety for vehicles transitioning between US 701/NC 96 and the interstate.
Infrastructure Improvement: Upgrades or replacement of pavement, curbing, and drainage networks within the project footprint.

This project is associated with a larger NCDOT initiative to modernize interstate highways by expanding them to six or eight lanes. As part of this larger effort, interstates and bridges are being replaced to meet current design standards.

Residential and commercial property owners along the project path should prepare for the NCDOT’s eventual offer and for modifications and interruptions that are likely to follow.
