Description

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes to construct a “complete street” to include intersection improvements, a multi-use path, sidewalks, and improved transit facilities along US 221 ALT (Charlotte Road/Main Street) from W. Court Street to Kentucky Street. This NCDOT project (#HL-0065) aims to enhance safety, mobility and connectivity for active transportation users (bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit riders).

The project proposes the following improvements along U.S. 221A (Charlotte Road/Main Street):

Reconfigure the existing 5-lane to a 3-lane from North Main St. to Executive Drive and a 4-lane median divided from Executive Drive to Railroad Avenue/College Avenue
- Access will be maintained to existing driveways and at key intersections (Methodist Drive, Elm Street, California Street, Indiana Street, and Illinois Street)
Improve the existing two-lane section with a median from Maryland Street to Oakland Road, providing pedestrian safety
Enhance pedestrian and bicycle access by adding a 10-foot multi-use path

Business and Homeowner Concerns

Residential and commercial property owners along the project path should prepare for the NCDOT’s eventual offer and for modifications and interruptions that are likely to follow. There may be surveyors and right-of-way agents analyzing area properties at any time.
