Description

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) plans to widen to three lanes a 1.5-mile section of US 221 Business (Rutherford Road) from U.S. 221/NC 226 South intersection to Georgia Avenue near the Oak Grove Cemetery in Rutherford.

New construction will include a middle turn lane, curb and gutter, and a sidewalk along the east side of the road.

The NCDOT asserts that widening will help improve traffic and reduce traffic collisions, as well as improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety.

Residents have mixed feelings about the project. While some are in favor of the projected improvements, other property owners affected have expressed concerns about the lengthy timeframe of construction and its potential effects on their businesses and homes.
