Description

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) plans to build a bridge over Main Street, the railroad track, and Ridge Avenue in Kannapolis.

The purpose of the bridge is to help improve traffic flow, safety, as well as efficiency of train traffic by removing the existing Rogers Lake Road at-grade railroad crossing and replacing it with a bridge.

This is an effort to try to reduce vehicle-train collisions and horn noise as well as improve traffic flow by eliminating the need for cars to stop at railroad crossings while trains pass through.

This project is part of an overall effort across North Carolina to reduce the number of redundant and/or unsafe rail-highway at-grade crossings. Additionally, the NCDOT is adding two daily round-trip trains between Raleigh and Charlotte, for a total of five. This project is expected to help further support this increase.
