The NCDOT plans to widen and make other improvements to a one-mile section of Hunter Hill Road (SR 1604) in Rocky Mount. This project will widen Hunter Hill Road from a two-lane roadway to a median divided highway from North Winstead Avenue (SR 1613) at the Exxon Station to Country Club Road (SR 1616) at the Rocky Mount Church of the Nazarene.

While planners and many residents agree these improvements are needed to help relieve traffic congestion and foster safer travels along Hunter Hill Road, some business owners are very concerned that the effects of the right-of-way acquisitions could put them out of business.

An editorial in the Rocky Mount Telegram pointed out, "Road improvements are wonderful things - unless we lose good neighbors and workers in the process."
