Sunset Avenue Widening & I-95 Interchange Construction
Fast Facts
NCDOT TIP # U-5026
Project Type: Road widening and interchange construction
Affected Counties: Nash
Estimated Cost: $ 106,656,000
Description
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) plans to construct interchange ramps and roundabouts at I-95 and Sunset Avenue in Rocky Mount. In addition to the upgraded interchange, Sunset Avenue will be widened to four lanes and improved with a median and sidewalks between Old Carriage and Halifax Roads.
Many home and business owners along this section of Sunset Avenue are likely to feel the effects from this project, both due to the outright purchase of land from their property as deemed necessary by the NCDOT, and from the permanent and temporary easements also being acquired to complete the project.
The purpose of the project is to provide better access onto I-95 for the Rocky Mount area and to accommodate the city’s increasing economic development. These improvements will tie into two additional NCDOT projects expected to move forward in the near future: the widening of Eastern Avenue from Red Oak Road to Old Carriage Road, the widening of Old Carriage Rd from Eastern Avenue to Green Hills Road.
