U.S. 1 Widening & Rockingham Bypass
Fast Facts
Project # R-2501
Type: Widening, New Bypass
Affected Counties: Richmond
Estimated Cost: $272,002,000
Description
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is planning to widen U.S. 1 and create a bypass around Rockingham.
The widening would turn U.S. 1 into a four-lane median-divided roadway, with no driveway access, from the South Carolina state line to State Road 1001 (SR 1001). Interchanges are planned at the U.S. 74 Bypass, Airport Road, U.S. 74 Business, and Wiregrass Road/County Home Road.
According to the NCDOT's Oct 2012 News Release, the purpose of the U.S. 1 Widening and Rockingham Bypass project is to "reduce travel time, reduce congestion in downtown Rockingham by diverting through traffic and truck traffic from local streets and improve mobility along U.S. 1."
The project is divided into 5 sections. Currently sections A and B are scheduled for reprioritization.
