Fast Facts
NCDOT TIP # R-5861
Project Type: Road widening
Affected Counties: Cherokee
Estimated Cost: $ 37,460,000
Description
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is seeking to expand US 19 in order to improve both traffic flow and roadway safety.
The project area is about 3.8 miles long and is located in the south-central section of Cherokee County. It extends from the Georgia-North Carolina state line to US 64-74. The area is surrounded by wooded areas and agricultural land as well as a few small commercial areas and notable commercial development at the intersection of US 19-129 and 64-74.
There were concerns that the project would destroy historic buildings, however, the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources confirmed that historic properties on, or eligible for, the National Historic Register are protected by the National Historic Preservation Act.
