One of the busiest stretches of road in Clemmons is Lewisville Clemmons Road as it intersects with I-40. To address the increasing congestion and add provisions for more pedestrian traffic, the NCDOT is proposing improvements that will transform how traffic flows along the 1.5-mile stretch, especially around I-40.

Some left turns along the project path will be eliminated, and new signals will be added where needed. This includes a new signal south of Stadium Drive’s intersection with a U-Turn. Additionally, a new signal is planned at Sessions Court.

The I-40 bridge will not be modified, though travel lanes will shrink for 12 to 11 feet to accommodate wider sidewalks without bridge work, and access to I-40 will become easier for some travelers with dedicated entry lanes.

This ~1.5 mile stretch of road is heavily commercialized with restaurants, retail, banking, and more. Under one alternative, a McDonald’s would need to be entirely relocated to accommodate the necessary work around the I-40 interchange. Right-of-way acquisitions along this corridor could modify, reduce, or eliminate access or parking, and may make existing improvements like buildings non-conforming.

It is vital that all property owners, especially commercial property owners, understand whether they are among the more than 65 parcels targeted for takings for this project. Some will lose substantial amounts of land and may experience negative business impacts. Traffic flow should improve, according to the NCDOT, but that does not necessarily mean it will improve for the businesses lining the corridor – it simply means they hope to decrease congestion.

This project is expected to cost more than $42 million, with more than $15 million set aside for property acquisition.
